If change is a challenge, "Switch, How to Change Things When Change is Hard" is a great guidebook for ideas and practices in managing change. Since change is now a constant in everyone's lives and the speed and intensity of change is ramping up, handling it well is both relevant and may create great opportunities.


We live in a world that has more complications, laws, requirements, expectations, etc. than ever before. Success will mean understanding change and making it work for us.


The Heath brothers, authors of Switch, look at change differently by suggesting that successfully handling change is sometimes counter-intuitive. Their analogy of the rider as our logic and the elephant as our emotion reminded me of the many times that my mouth (emotions) overcame my head (logic) and I instantly regretted voicing my "opinion". The rider (my head) thought that it was in charge and then, whammy, the elephant (my emotions) went "Oh No, I am taking over now and you can worry about the consequences later!"


Switch gives us a chance to reevaluate how individuals and organizations approach change, try out the tools and information that Dan and Chip give us, and see if we can make life easier, less stressful, and more successful.


As an aside, I love to get great customer service and Paul from Harris Jewelers in Burford recently reminded me how much I appreciate it. After repairing a pearl pin of great sentimental value to me, he dropped it off at Easy Way when picking up some supplies. I was happy that my pin was fixed very promptly, I didn't have to remember to go pick it up, and then Paul wowed me by refusing any payment. Guess where I will go next time that I need something that he sells!


See how the elephant (my emotion) is dictating my behavior even though our logic might tell us that there are dozens of stores that sell jewelry and
possibly some cheaper (rider), but the elephant is going to win out here as I LOVE great service. Thanks, Paul, I really appreciated your thoughtfulness, particularly as I had mentioned that it was one of the very few keepsakes that I have from my Mom!


A simple change that we implemented recently was started from a discussion with Colin, our compounder, about ideas for improving our production area's
organization and processes. A simple checklist, as suggested by Switch, was created and is attached to every production and packaging sheet as an easy
reminder to put away the tools used, the labels, the packaging, etc. It is much more effective than just saying to someone "Clean up after yourself"; we all intend to do things right and the checklist helps create positive routines."


One thing that is always needed is your feedback and only how we ask for it changes. Please tell me how Easy Way and we are we do a great job for you? Do we treat you well? Get back to you promptly? Understand your needs? Get you the right product at the right price at the right time in the right place and with a smile on our face and in our voice? Would love to hear from you!
